Basal metabolic rate is the minimum energy the body uses at rest to maintain vital functions. It is then used as a base for estimating daily calorie needs with activity level.

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation uses sex, age, height and weight. It estimates BMR in kcal per day, then TDEE is obtained by multiplying BMR by an activity factor.

A BMR does not mean you should eat exactly that number of calories. It represents resting energy. For maintenance, loss or gain, start from TDEE and adjust according to real trend.
